An Indigenous agency serving families in Toronto is launching a new pilot project in the hope of mitigating the harm children have faced from spending too much time indoors as a result of the COVID-19 lockdown.The project began Monday and will provide families with the opportunity to meet with the agency for wellness checks in parks around Toronto, said Jeffrey Schiffer, the executive director of Native Child and Family Services of Toronto. Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, we really witnessed a lot of the prevention programs that the community relies on disappear, he said. Vulnerable kids are struggling right now with a lot of mental health challenges, isolation, anxiety, depression, problems concentrating, and for Indigenous people this is really acute because of the history of disease pandemics for Indigenous folks.
