By GEORGE MORSESports And OutdoorsLos Alamos Daily PostThe State Department of Game and Fish stocked 77,741 fingerling Rio Grande cutthroat trout in the Rio Grande Gorge above Pilar. The stocking was <a href=https://www.stanley-germany.de>stanley de part of the Departments program of expanding the range of the cutthroat troutOne of two species of trout historically native to New Mexico, the other being the Gila trout, Rio Grande cutthroats inhabited the main stem of the Rio Grande and its major tributaries in New Mexico. Habitat degradation, over-fishing and the introduction of non-native species of trout have resulted in over 90-p stanley mugs ercent loss of habitat for the cutthroats.Introduced brown trout prey heavily on cutthroats and introduced rainbow trout readily crossbreed with cutthroats, diluting the genetics and creating hybrids known as cutbows. The Department has devoted the Seven Springs Fish Hatchery, locat stanley cup ed in the Jemez Mountains near Fenton Lake, to raising only Rio Grande cutthroat trout for the restocking of its streams and rivers.Fenton Lake State Park in the Jemez Mountains is open. It was stocked Aug. 26 with 2,205 rainbow trout. It received a stocking Aug. 31 of big rainbow trout averaging 18.7 inches in size. Fishing has improved here with the recent stockings.Camping is allowed by reservation only. Fenton also has wild brown trout and Rio Grande cutthroat trout from an earlier stocking. Only two cutthroat trout may be kept per-day as part of the five-trout-per-day bag limit.
