As temperatures outside drop and customers notice their gas charges rising, the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities DPU offers the following inf stanley kubek ormation to help customers understand the breakdown of the rate.The total gas charge on a customers bill comprises a flat monthly service fee plus three other components that make up the variable portion of the rate. Those are a fixed cost per therm, a variable pass-through cost of gas per therm, and a sunset recovery mechanism per therm.Fixed cost per thermThe fixed component covers DPUs natural gas maintenance and operations expenses. DPU collects this portion of the rate to ensure the gas distribution system infrastructure is safe, reliable, and well-maintained, and to pay the labor and benefits costs to make that happen. For residential and commercial customers, this rate is $0.27/therm.Pass-Through Cost of GasThe pass-through rate allows DPUs actual cost to purchase the natural gas commodity to be passed directly to the customer. The Council, not includingmyself, called an election last November to eliminate the office. After a contentious campaign,Los Alamos voted to keep an elected Sheriff. I believe a majority on Council now accepts thatour citizens want a functional Sheriffs Office. We need to agree on what the Sheriffs functionswill be.I am proposing a Resolution: losalamosnm.us/UserFiles/Servers/Server_...%2017-08_Sheriff.pdf to return a reasonable set of duties to the Sheriffs Office. This Resolution isa compromise that acknowledges the wishes of the majority to preserve a functional electe stanley termosy dSheriffs Office, while respecting the concerns of those who voted to eliminate the office.The Resolution is aimed at resolving three areas of concern: legal, political and practicalconsiderations.
