His project is titled, The Stability of Solar Flares.For the past few years, Plohr has attended public lectures at local nature center PEEC. One of them was about the sun. I learned that the Aurora Borealis is actually a solar magnetic storm interacting with the Earths magnetic field, Plohr said. He wanted to know how solar flares could extend all the way to Earths atmosphere. These flares consist of plasma pushing out of the surface of the sun. Sometimes they can form coronal mass ejections, Plohr said, which involves big blobs of high-energy plasma that spew out in a random direction. Resource Specialists are gathering information on heritage sites and range improvements in the current management area and fire crews are implementing fire protection preparations on those identified sites.In addition, one Wildland Fire Module is monitoring fire behavior and gathering data on fire effects.The fire continues to burn in ponderosa pine and mixed-conifer forests. The Red Canyon fire is enhancing wildlife habitat, while protecting cultural resources, reducing hazardous fuels and returning fire to the ecosystem.There are 43 fire personnel assigned to the fire, one Hot Shot crew, one Wildland Fire Module, one helicopter, and support personnel.
